ABOUT US
Dr. Alan Button (left), after receiving his PhD from the Institute of Paper Chemistry, has distinguished himself at both Champion International and James River (later Fort James and then Georgia-Pacific) in fiber and paper development. His varied applied research and management positions have allowed him to develop a highly refined expertise in the areas of testing instruments and procedures, correlation of data and then interpretation of the data. Both pulp producers as well as papermakers have realized that correct courses of action can be determined only after all the supporting data has been properly analyzed and interpreted. It is in these areas that Dr. Button’s expertise is invaluable. His extensive work defining and interpreting all the data found in “The World Of Market Pulp” is the solid basis for the team’s findings. Dr. Hiroki Nanko (center) was chosen to be the Technical Advisor for The World of Market Pulp because of his outstanding reputation in the field of electron microscopy specifically focused on pulp and paper. As the Principal Research Scientist and director of electron microscopy program at the Institute of Paper Science and Technology (IPST) at Georgia Tech, he has gained extensive experience in the all aspects of this highly specialized discipline. Dr. Nanko consults with many major paper companies and chemical suppliers. Both Japanese and U.S. papermakers have retained him in nanotechnology studies involving the development of functional papers and high-tech specialty papers. His recent research includes non-traditional applications of wood pulp (fiber reinforced cement), and non-wood fibers (chicken feather fiber composites). Dr. Nanko has authored more than 45 publications. His proven abilities as a highly regarded consultant stem from both his industry experiences while at The Institute coupled with his 13 years as the Fiber & Paper Physics specialist at the Japan Pulp & Paper Research Institute. Dave Hillman (right) has been a student of market pulp fibers for more than 40 years, including 17 years in Fine Papers product development, new products and new product management at Westvaco. This involved both coated and uncoated printing, converting and specialty papers. As a technical consultant to both market pulp producers as well as to pulp consumers, Dave helps clients determine product distinctive properties and outstanding attributes for successful strategic target marketing of their products. Whereas most industry specialists tend to concentrate on either pulp or paper, Dave is an expert who can speak knowledgeably about both in practical terms that emphasize concrete benefits rather than sometimes hard-to-define characteristics. His favorite way of disseminating this information is through comprehensive in-plant seminars involving the customers’ principal staff members.
